誰にも、折にふれて思い出す、記憶に刻まれたアルバムや歌がある。私にとっては、アート・ガーファンクル（Art Garfunkel）のアルバム “Scissors Cut”, Aug. 1981 はその一つだ。
妻にプレゼントするために買ったものだった。彼女は、アルバムの2曲目 “Scissors Cut”がとくに好きだった。

Scissors, Paper, Rock はジャンケンだ。三人のどうにもうまく行かない関係、やきもきするような、精神的に人をむしばむような、それを喩えている。
アルバムには「バード（Bird）に捧ぐ」と記されている。ローリー・バード（Laurie Bird）は女優で写真家、アートの恋人だった。LP版ジャケットの裏面には彼女の写真（唇の上でカットされていて顔はでていない）が使われている。
彼女は1979年6月、NYのガーファンクルと一緒に住んでいた部屋で自ら死をえらんだ。ガーファンクルは映画の撮影で英国に滞在していて不在、その間の出来事だった。その2年後に発売されたのがこのアルバムだ。
このアルバム以降、ほぼ10年、ガーファンクルは新しいアルバムを出していない。
