Bicycle (2016, UK) にみる自転車文化の成熟

Amazonプライムには、日本で公開されていなかった映画やドキュメンタリーがある。『Bicycle』はその一本だった。

『Bicycle』は、英国における自転車をめぐる歴史を画期ごとに振り返り、自転車の文化を創ってきた人たちのインタビュー、「自転車に乗る」文化が市民社会のなかにどのように成熟していったのか、それを的確に知ることができる。そして映像が美しい、音楽も良い。映画の始まりは、監督の少年時代、父と子と自転車、その一枚の写真から始まる。最後は、父と4歳くらいの女の子が自転車道（ Cycle paths）で自転車に乗る練習をしている。そして、乗れたことに飛び上がって喜び、父に駆け寄る。抱き上げる父と娘のショット。それは、この映画の監督とその娘だ。父から子へ、その子が父になり、そして娘へ。自転車に乗ること（Cycling）が家族の歴史とともに引き継がれてきているのだ、そう言っている。

余暇を楽しむ自転車、実用としての自転車、全国に張り巡らされた自転車道ネットワーク、今も都市内での自転車道の整備がすすんでいる。
